[Coming in from a poké-walk, Persian and Absol trail behind Nanu as Honchkrow and Krookodile run around to the backyard and Sableye scrambles upstairs. The two felines find Archie first, with Nanu shuffling in behind them with the intent to get a snack.]
[Persian glances at her trainer before coming over for some pets, of course—also subtle begging for some of that orange. Absol passes Archie by and lingers for a pet or two, before slinking over to the doorway and to settle down for some uncomfortable staring.]
[Archie doesn't hear the front door open again; just some shuffling and eventual footsteps toward the back rooms. Maybe fifteen minutes go by? before footsteps sound closer again. Two shadows in the shape of Sableye and Weavile dart across the doorway in the opposite direction, and Nanu calls out from the other room.]
[she is lavished with pets and given a slice of orange. give her the shit she wants that's how you make friends with persian!!! archie coos and tells her how silky and wonderful her fur is for a moment until the two goblins appear. he tosses the rest of the orange to absol and crouches to try and scoop up his favourite gremlin.]
Nope! [he offers no other explanation. nanu can probably work it out.]
[Absolutely loving it, she is. Though she's not really happy that her rightful and solo attention is turned to being given to Sableye, but fine, whatever. Absol just watches the orange drop in front of him. Miraculously, he does take a piece, but pushes the rest toward Persian.]
[Sableye is too busy running around with her favorite troublemaking partner. She is happy to see Archie, however; she gives a loud, joyous screech (that Persian audibly objects to), sidetracking her dash and making a combeeline to the pirate. She jumps in his arms, scrambles onto his shoulder, climbs onto his head, and leap-froakie's off of his back, all while chattering happily and unintelligibly. She then resumes her mad dash with Weavile.]
Sure I do! [said in a tone that doesn't imply a complete lack of self-awareness.] I was wonderin' if you wanted a battle! I know there ain't no centres around, so I'm happy to do it in a way that permits it bein' called off it anything looks too nasty. Anyway! All of my team are fixin' for one and I reckon Sharpedo misses mega-evolvin'.
[showing his hand, maybe, but he's pretty sure nanu's seen his keystone before? he doesn't exactly hide it.]
[said less out of incredulousness, and more the fact that it's so out of the blue. Persian certainly perks up, though, giving Nanu A Look that reads she's ready for some action, herself.]
...Hmh. I guess. [yeah! alright!! a solid i guess!!] It'll burn off some energy and keep the lot of them out of trouble for a while, if anything..
[woo!! the excitement!! the thrill!! the complete uncaring over archie's keystone!!]
[...He actually likes the idea, itching for a battle himself. But he can't let Archie know that.]
[he knows that's not what nanu meant but PAY ATTENTION TO HIS REALLY COOL ABILITY HE WORKED HARD ON!!!]
Nice! That's why I broke in without breaking anything. I also thought of a good joke I really wanted to tell you but I, ah... [forgot it, because he's so focused on battling. he shakes his head and jumps up.] Come on, then!
That's the only reason? [how polite of him] Not the parade of pokémon who would get on your case as soon as you came in through the window?
[It's mostly rhetorical, and he's moving past Archie as he talks. In the opposite direction. Toward the backyard. This time it's not just to spite the other man—he's recalling his pokémon back into their balls. Except Sableye. She uses Archie as a vault and Nanu recalls her in the house, mid-air.]
[He grabs his Z-Ring off the kitchen counter and heads for the front door this time.]
You got a place in mind, or do we have to find a clearing?
I mean... that too. [god does he love these awful little goblins. he waits for nanu to recall them all, tossing one of his own pokéballs up and down a few times while he waits, cocks his head at the z-ring.] There's a good space near the lake-- I'd need it for Sharpedo. Can't very well release him onto dry land.
[He wasn't really going to argue, so long as it wasn't in the city proper.]
[Before opening the door, he writes a little note to Anabel on a pad of paper near the front door. Maybe it won't get eaten this time. And with that, he gestures outside to Archie.] Lead the way.
[it's not a long trip, either. maybe twenty minutes walking? archie just talks about dumb shit the entire time, maybe a little clearly too uncomfortable with a silence between them. he barely gives nanu a chance to get a word in edgewise-- talking about shit he's been doing, his new job, what he thinks of the boss, some of the woodworking he's been doing... he expects nanu wouldn't really have any words to get in either way. it's almost like he doesn't breath and a little almost like he doesn't really have... anyone else to talk to? he does, but. he doesn't. not really.
when they get there, archie releases sharpedo into the lake immediately.]
[It was a rough trip, and almost as if Archie had pent up so much unused conversation that he started dumping it on Nanu at the first opportunity. He doesn't get many replies that aren't sidelong glances or bewildered looks, so Archie's really just lucky that Nanu didn't subtly start hanging back and escaping. Doesn't the guy have Jill or someone to talk to? Any other friends?]
[(it's not so bad)]
[Finally, the lake gloriously comes into view, and Nanu can only hope the pirate doesn't talk as much during battle.]
Five. The Meowth back home's too young. [He reaches into his pocket, but doesn't take out a pokémon yet.] You starting with Sharpedo?
[........... he doesn't think too hard about that. he just nods in understanding.]
I get that. I got a Wailmer back home that's of age, but she just don't like it, so we just let her chill out on the sidelines instead. She's plenty happy to just watch.
[archie thinks for a moment, then shakes his head.]
Nah, think I just want him to get some water. [he takes out his own ball, tossing it forward. out comes electrode with a happy buzzing. it certainly looks a lot more confident than nanu might've seen it in the past.] This is our first proper battle together, Electrode! I hope you're lookin' forward to it as I am!!
[Well...the Meowth's also only level 5. It would probably end very badly.]
[Electrode comes out and its's still just as baffling that it's on Archie's team as ever. Nanu nods and clicks an ultra ball, and to no one's surprise, it's Krookodile. He chomps his teeth in the air and stamps his feet on the ground. The two don't even need to look at each other; Krookodile knows what's coming, and both have wordless full trust in each other.]
[He's ready, and more importantly, his ability is Intimidate.]
[Nanu's not nearly as enthusiastic a battler, as Archie must have already guessed. At least not until things ramp up; he barely moves when he calls out the attack.]
Earthquake.
[Krookodile slams itself to the ground on all-fours, and sets off the quake. Nanu silently hopes there wasn't anybody in the quake's vicinity, even if they're seemingly alone out here...]
[the poor ball pokémon bounces around through the vibrations while archie also... tries not to fall on his ass. it's probably not a surprise to nanu that archie is... animated, while he battles. the ground splinters and breaks from the earthquake and electrode does a good job of ping-ponging around the damaging quake... right up until it accidentally ramps off a piece of upturned ground and lands ass-first on another crack. it buzzes as it cries out and despite being a seasoned battler, archie can't help but wince a little at its cry of pain.
somehow, electrode doesn't fucking DIE from the super effective attack but it's clearly very beat up, so archie returns it back to its ball. he would like to throw out muk and let the swamp boys commune for fun, but that ground typing... sigh. there's a clear hesitation as he decides how to deal with this (or maybe he's just making up for sharpedo already being out), eventually deciding on the shark. he grabs his mega anchor dramatically-- sharpedo already knows what's up. it dives down into the water and jumps up as the mega evolution energy encapsulates it to release it into its new form. it roars as it breaks through the barrier while archie laughs loudly, clearly enjoying this.]
[That the oversized ball managed to dodge a large part of the quake is impressive, Nanu admits, though its ultimate fate was unfortunate. He expected Archie to switch out because of the type disadvantage—what he didn't expect was using mega evolution this early on.]
[Krookodile didn't, either. It watches Sharpedo's transformation with clear intrigue, as Archie's keystone and Sharpedo's body emit a dazzling bright light. The water-type pokémon dramatically breaks out of its energy shell and emerges looking twice as dangerous, and twice as edgy. The roar doesn't make Krookodile flinch, but both he and Nanu know there's no avoiding this super-effective attack.]
Brace yourself, Krookodile!
[With little he can do, Krookodile both braces himself and tries to miss the worst of the mega-evolved Waterfall. Coming straight out of the lake like that, it's a straight shot as the water pushed forward by Sharpedo hits the ground-type with all the force of a real waterfall. The newly pointed, ragged spikes on the shark's nose jam into Krookodile's middle as the rushing water propels them upwards.]
[Nanu takes out his ultra ball, fully expecting to switch out a fainted pokémon when Krookodile smacks harshly on the ground...when instead, the croc shakily gets to its feet, bruised and beaten. He turns to his trainer with a big Krookodile grin, having endured the hit just for Nanu. In a real battle, it would've been a big comeback. Here, with limited supplies, they take it as much as a KO as Electrode's.]
[Nanu nods to Krookodile in thanks...] Good job. [...and receives a proud, but exhaustedly broken call in return; before recalling him into his ball.]
...Hmh. Didn't expect you to pull that card so early. [Just like he doesn't want to pull his Z-Move card so early. Sorry, Archie; he still doesn't look impressed... but he does look appreciative of the ability. Mega evolution takes a strong bond, after all. Regardless, Nanu thinks a moment before grabbing another ultra ball, and out comes Honchkrow. It leers down at Mega Sharpedo, though otherwise doesn't seem phased, much like its trainer.] Aerial Ace.
[The mob-bird pokémon barely takes time to consider the attack before performing. With lightning speed, Honchkrow dash-flies in and out of sight, circling Sharpedo in the blink of an eye, and finally dives in to strike.]
